In UNFCCC submission, CGIAR proposes spin-off group theme for non-market approaches

CGIAR has proposed harnessing non-market approaches “to accelerate action at scale for climate-resilient low emissions food systems and sustainable agricultural consumption and production” in response to a call for inputs to the next meeting of the Glasgow Committee on Non-Market Approaches.

The subject of Article 6.8 of the Paris Agreement, non-market approaches — or NMAs — represent mechanisms that allow for cooperation between parties on climate action that aligns with sustainable development objectives. They are meant to incentivize the participation of both public and private actors in the implementation of nationally determined contributions as well as support opportunities to coordinate relevant instruments and institutional arrangements. The Glasgow Committee on Non-Market Approaches implements the framework and the work program on NMAs.

The CGIAR Initiative on Low-Emission Food Systems spearheaded the drafting of the submission to the call for inputs to the next session of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice in Bonn, Germany. These inputs should revolve around themes for spin-off groups and existing non-market approaches under the initial focus areas of the work program activities.

“The subject of climate-resilient low emissions food systems and sustainable agricultural consumption and production is fundamentally related to global markets, supply chains and trade. Hence Parties would need to consider whether the scope of NMAs could support initiatives related to trade, sustainability and commodities within the context of Article 6.8,” the CGIAR submission notes.
